Description

Pagano et al identified risk factors for an invasive fungal infection (IFI) in a patient with a myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN). These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are members of SEIFEM (Sorveglianza Epidemiologica Infezioni Fungine nelle Emopatie Maligne) Group in Italy.

Patient selection: chronic myeloid leukemia, essential thrombocythemia, polycythemia rubra vera, myelofibrosis

Risk factors for invasive fungal infections:

(1) immunosuppression

(2) severe and prolonged neutropenia associated with therapy

In general, the risk for invasive fungal infection is low.

If the condition progresses to acute leukemia, then the risk of IFI may increase to intermediate or high.
