Description

Paez and Costa listed factors associated with mortality in a patient with pneumonia caused by Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. The infection is associated with a high mortality rate. The authors are from the University of Sao Paulo.


 

Risk factors for mortality:

(1) underlying hematologic malignancy

(2) admission to the ICU

(3) shock

(4) thrombocytopenia

(5) APACHE II score > 15

 

Additional factors that may contribute to mortality:

(1) inappropriate antibiotic therapy

(2) number of organ failures
