Description

Osborne et al reported risk factors for 30-day alcohol-related readmission for a patient admitted for an alcohol-related diagnosis. This can help to identify a patent who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the Mayo Clinic.


Patient selection: at discharge following admission for alcohol-related diagnosis

 

Risk factors for readmission:

(1) younger age (< 50 years)

(2) severe alcohol withdrawal

(3) history of psychiatric disorder (OR 1.45)

(4) marital status single or unknown (OR 2.4 for single; 2.3 if unknown;1.9 if divorced)

(5) number of prior alcohol-related admissions in the previous year (OR 1.4 per admission)

(6) benzodiazepine or barbiturate use during hospitalization or upon discharge (OR 1.65)

(7) therapy with an opioid or muscle relaxant (OR 1.4)

(8) higher Charlson comorbidity index (1.13 per unit; need 4 to get to OR 1.6)
