Oliveras et al identified risk factors associated with stroke in patients who have had a renal transplant. This can help identify those patients who may benefit from closer monitoring and more aggressive management. The authors are from Hospital Universitari del Mar in Barcelona, Spain.
Parameters identified on multivariate analysis:
(1) age
(2) history of diabetic nephropathy
(3) peripheral vascular disease (screened for in the lower limbs)

Additional factors associated with stroke:
(1) A history of previous stroke was present in 40% of patients who developed a stroke.
(2) No patient with interstitial nephropathy developed stroke.
(3) All patients who developed stroke were hypertensive.
Interpretation
• minimum number of risk factors: 0
• maximum number of risk factors: 3
• The more risk factors that are present the greater the risk for stroke.
• Patients who developed stroke had a high morbidity and mortality. Approximately half of the patients died within 3 months of the stroke.
