Oderich et al listed risk factors for mortality associated with an infected aortic aneurysm. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the Mayo Clinic.
Patient selection: infected aortic aneurysm
Outcome: mortality
Risk factors for death:
(1) female sex
(2) extensive periaortic infection
(3) infection with Staphylococcus aureus
(4) rupture of the aneurysm
(5) suprarenal location
The risk of mortality increases with the number of risk factors present.
