Nobrega et al identified risk factors for bacteriuria and urinary tract infection in women following urodynamic studies. These can help to identify a woman who should be monitored after the procedure. The authors are from Santa Casa de Sao Paulo School of Medicine in Brazil.
Patient selection: adult woman having a urodynamic study (age range 26 to 84 years)
Urinary tract infection (UTI) was defined as:
(1) urinary culture >= 100,000 CFU/mL in >= 1 urine culture
(2) symptomatic (dysuria, polyuria, urinary urgency)
Bacteriuria:
(1) urinary culture >= 100,000 CFU/mL in >= 1 urine culture
(1a) transient if seen in only 1 urinalysis
(1b) nontransent if seen in >= 2 urinalyses within a 1 week period
(2) asymptomatic
Risk factors for bacteriuria:
(1) body mass index > 30 kg per square meter
(2) hypothyroidism
(3) advanced pelvic organ prolapse
Risk factors for urinary tract infection (UTI):
(1) body mass index > 30 kg per square meter
