Description

Nobili et al identified risk factors for pulmonary complications after hepatic resection. These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive pulmonary care. The authors are from Hopital de Hautepierre and Universite de Strasbourg in France.


Patient selection: hepatic resection

 

Risk factors for pulmonary complications NOS:

(1) prolonged surgery

(2) nasogastric tube

(3) intra-operative blood transfusion

(4) diabetes mellitus

(5) transverse subcostal bilateral muscle cutting incision

 

Risk factors for pleural effusion:

(1) prolonged surgery

(2) surgery on the right lobe of the liver

(3) neoadjuvant chemotherapy

(4) transverse subcostal bilateral muscle cutting incision

 

Risk factors for pneumonia:

(1) intra-operative blood transfusion

(2) diabetes mellitus

(3) atrial fibrillation

 

Risk factors for pulmonary embolism:

(1) history of previous thromboembolic event
