Description

Nadler et al identified risk factors for traumatic injuries to children while on a driveway. The authors are from Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh.

Risk factors for pediatric injury:

(1) larger vehicle (pickup truck, sports utility vehicle, truck) with limited rear visibility backing up

(2) young children playing on or around the driveway

(3) children playing within a vehicle and putting it in gear

(4) small child being left unattended or without adult supervision

A small child (< 2 years of age or < 12 kilograms) is more likely to be severely injured if involved in a driveway accident.

Preventive measures:

(1) Making sure that all vehicles have locked doors and closed windows.

(2) Discouraging children from playing on the driveway or in the street.

(3) Use of extended mirrors and other safety devices on larger vehicles with limited rear visibility.

(4) Applying the safety brake in addition to setting the transmission in park.

(5) Having someone responsible watch the children, especially when any vehicle is backing up.
