Description

Na et al identified risk factors for early medical emergency team (MET) reactivation for a hospitalized patient. The authors are from Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul.

Patient selection: hospitalized patient who has had the MET activation

Early MET activation is defined as a repeat call within 72 hours after the index call.

Risk factors for early reactivation:

(1) bedside concern about overall deterioration without abnormal physiologic variables (OR 1.3)

(2) chronic lung disease (OR 1.4)

(3) chronic liver disease (OR 1.4)

(4) discussion of treatment limitations (OR 0.39)

(5) initial MET activation for advice or consultation only (OR 0.8)

A patient admitted to the ICU after the first episode or a patient successfully treated would likely be excluded, so there is relation intermediate disease severity.

Risk factors for ICU admission after reactivation:

(1) medical inpatient (OR 1.7)

(2) chronic liver disease (OR 1.7)

(3) hematologic malignancy (OR 1.6)

(4) tachypnea (respiratory rate > 20 breaths per minute) at end of MET call (OR 1.5)

(5) discussion of treatment limitations (OR 0.14)
