Munigala et al identified risk factors for early readmission in a patient admitted for acute pancreatitis. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Saint Louis University, University of Kansas and University of Minnesota.
Patient selection: discharge following hospital admission for acute pancreatitis, >= 18 years of age
Outcome: early readmission (<= 30 days)
Risk factors for early readmission from a multivariate analysis:
(1) male gender
(2) Elixhauser comorbidity score >= 3 (over range from 0 to 28)
(3) non-biliary etiology (alcohol, "other", idiopathic)
(4) one or more organ failures (heart, respiratory, renal, hypotension)
(5) pseudocyst or walled-off necrosis
(6) discharge to an extended care facility
Risk of readmission was lower in patients with acute biliary pancreatitis who underwent cholecystectomy.
