Description

Moshkowitz et al identified risk factors for mortality and relapse in elderly patients with pseudomembranous enterocolitis. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Tel-Aviv Sourasky Medical Centre in Israel.

Risk factors for mortality:

(1) white blood cell count > 20,000 per µL

(2) serum albumin < 2.5 g/dL

(3) naso-gastric tubal feeding prior to hospitalization

Risk factors for relapse:

(1) living in a nursing home

(2) therapy with an acid-reducing medication

An old and debilitated patient is at risk for complications.
