Description

Mosconi et al identified risk factors associated with development of pneumonia in patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). These can help identify patients who may require closer monitoring and more aggressive management. The authors are from Milano, Italy.

Selection: no previous pulmonary infection, ICU stay >= 48 hours, condition not rapidly fatal (no imminent death)

Age of patients: all ages, with a third young adults and a third middle aged

Risk factors:

(1) neuromuscular disease

(2) impaired airway reflexes on admission (to ED or ICU) due to underlying disease

(3) respiratory assistance through an endotracheal tube (ventilatory support) >= 24 hours

Impaired airway reflexes was defined as impaired or absence of:

(1) spontaneous breathing

(2) glottic closure

(3) cough
