Description

A patient who wears contact lenses may develop a corneal infiltrative event (CIE, or keratitis), especially if certain risk factors are present.


 

A Corneal Infiltrative Event (CIE) is a defined as a condition associated with inflammatory cell aggregates in the cornea, irrespective to the cause. This encompasses both microbial and sterile keratitis.

 

Risk factors for CIE with odds ratio >= 2:

(1) wearing contact lenses during winter months (January, February or March north of the equator)

(2) absence of relevant health problems

(3) extended wear lens (compared to daily wear rigid lens)

 

Additional risk factors:

(1) male gender

(2) smoking

(3) absence of relevant eye problems

 

A patient with a relevant medical or eye problem may not wear contact lenses as much or for as long as someone without either.
