Description

A patient undergoing adrenalectomy for an adrenal cortical neoplasm may be at risk for postoperative deep venous thromboembolism. Moore et al identified patients who may beneift from extended antithrombotic prophylaxis. The authors are from Cornell University and Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Patient selection: adrenalectomy for adrenal cortical tumor

Risk factors for venous thromboembolism:

(1) adrenal cortical carcinoma (OR 2.29)

(2) older age (age > 53 years; OR 1.82)

(3) Khorana score >= 2 (OR 2.95)

Open adrenalectomy has an odds ratio of 1.81 with p value 0.055.

The presence of multiple risk factors can help to identify a patient who may benefit from prolonged antithrombotic prophylaxis.
