Description

Montesinos et al evaluated patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APML) for risk factors associated with thrombosis. These can help to identify a patient at risk for early mortality. The authors are from multiple institutions in Spain and The Netherlands.

Patient selection: acute promyelocytic leukemia (APML)

Risk factors for thrombosis from multivariate analysis:

(1) hypofibrinogenemia (< 170 mg/dL)

(2) M3-v subtype

Additional factors associated with thrombosis:

(1) treatment with tranexamic acid

(2) leukocytosis (> 10 * 10^9/L)

(3) hemoglobin > 10 g/dL

Thrombosis was associated with death before start of chemotherapy and with higher induction mortality.
