Description

Mokni et al identified risk factors associated with erysipelas involving the leg of patients living in Tunisia. These can help identify patients at greatest risk, who may benefit from preventive measures. The authors are from multiple hospitals in Tunis and France.

Definition of erysipelas:

(1) sudden onset (< 24 hours)

(2) well-demarcated dermatitis

(3) associated with chills and/or fever

Patient selection: >= 15 years of age

High risk factors (odds ratio 14 to 19):

(1) lymphedema

(2) disruption of the skin barrier (leg ulcer, traumatic wound, excoriated leg dermatosis, pressure ulcer, plantar squamous lesion or toe-web interrigo)

Moderate risk factors (odds ratio 5 to 7):

(1) edema of the leg

(2) history of previous leg surgery

Low risk factors (odds ratios 1 to 2):

(1) obesity

Protective factors (odds ratio 0.6 to 0.7):

(1) sedentary work

(2) venous insufficiency
