Mischinger et al studied risk factors for complications and mortality in patients with a pyogenic liver abscess. This can help identify patients who require more aggressive management and closer monitoring. The authors are from Karl-Franzens University in Graz, Austria.
Risk factors for a complicated course and/or mortality:
(1) high APACHE II score (uncomplicated patients had scores ranging from 0 to 11)
(2) low hemoglobin level (< 11 g/dL)
(3) high serum total bilirubin (> 1.5 mg/dL)
(4) presence of malignancy
(5) leukocytosis (> 15,000 per µL)
