Description

A small percentage of patients with systemic sclerosis develop limb gangrene associated with peripheral vasculopathy. Mihai et al identified risk factors for this complication. The authors are from multiple institutions in Europe.


Patient selection: systemic sclerosis

 

Outcome: limb gangrene

 

Frequency: about 9% in study cohort

 

The most significant risk factor is a history of digital ulcer, with odds ratio of 38.4.

 

Other risk factors for gangrene:

(1) history of digital gangrene

(2) diffuse cutaneous subset (dcSSc, OR 2.5)

(3) older age

(4) longer disease duration
