Michelena et al identified risk factors for renal impairment in axial spondyloarthritis. The authors ar from L'Hospitalet de Llobregat in Barcelona and the University of Leeds.
Patient selection: axial spondyloarthritis
Outcome: renal impairment (eGFR < 60 mL per min per 1.73 square meters)
Risk factors for renal impairment from the multivariate analysis:
(1) older age (> 60 years of age; odds ratio 1.12)
(2) dyslipidemia (odds ratio 6.2)
Other factors associated with renal impairment:
(1) male sex
(2) longer disease duration (> 35 years)
(3) cardiovascular comorbidity
(4) hypertension
(5) greater disease activity (ASDAS or BASFI)
(6) higher ESR
where:
• Use of NSAIDs in the renal impairment group was lower but may not reflect cumulative exposure.
