Description

Mendoza-Alonzo et al reported risk factors for the development of osteonecrosis (ON) in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). These can help to identify a patient who is at risk for this complication. The authors are from University of South Florida and Universidad de Los Lagos in Chile.

Patient selection: systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)

Outcome: osteonecrosis

Risk factors for osteonecrosis:

(1) mean consumption of corticosteroids in mg per day (OR 1.05)

(2) tobacco use (OR 1.64)

(3) younger age at first episode of osteonecrosis (OR 0.92)

A high cumulative dose of corticosteroids also increases the risk.
