Description

Mecoli et al reported risk factors for intraoperative intravenous catheter extravasation in child. Recognition of risk factors allows for interventions to reduce the risk. The authors are from Cincinnati Children's Hospital and the University of Cincinnati.

Patient selection: child undergoing surgery with intravenous catheter, from 39 to 162 months of age.

Outcome: extravasation

Risk factors for extravasation from multivariate analysis:

(1) ASA status 3, 4 or 5 (OR 2.4)

(2) inpatient surgery (OR 3.0)

(3) intravenous catheter placed using ultrasound guidance (OR 8.0)

Additional factor identified on univariate analysis:

(1) multiple attempts at insertion
