Description

McGuire et al listed risk factors for an invasive fungal infection in a premature infant.

Risk factors:

(1) colonization by yeast or fungi

(2) critically ill at birth

(3) central venous catheter

(4) parenteral nutrition

(5) therapy with multiple courses of broad-spectrum antibiotics, especially third generation cephalosporins

(6) therapy with an H2-receptor antagonist

A preterm infant with one or more of these risk factors should be monitored for an invasive fungal infection.

An invasive fungal infection should be considered in a septic-appearing neonate with negative blood cultures.
