Description

Maze et al reported risk factors for intracranial hemorrhage for an adult with acute leukemia. These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management to avoid this complication. The authors are from Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and University Health Network Toronto.

Patient selection: adult with acute leukemia

Risk factors for intracranial hemorrhage:

(1) greater leukocytosis (mean 84.5 * 10^9/L vs 28.7 * 10^9/L)

(2) older age (use > 60 years)

(3) diabetes mellitus

(4) high peripheral absolute blast count (mean 61.3 * 10^9/L vs 21.2 * 10^9/L)

(5) prolonged PT in seconds (> 16 seconds)

Platelet parameters (count, refractory status, number of days with thrombocytopenia) were not risk factors for intracranial bleeding.
