Description

Ma et al identified risk factors for infectious complications following ureteroscopy. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from closer monitoring or preventive measures. The authors are from Sichuan University in Chengdu, China.

Patient selection: ureteroscopy (including ureteroscopic lithotripsy)

Outcome: infectious complication (urinary tract infection, urosepsis)

Risk factors for an infectious complication:

(1) female sex (OR 1.8)

(2) preoperative ureteric stent insertion (OR 1.9)

(3) diabetes mellitus (OR 1.4)

(4) positive urine culture before ureteroscopy (OR 2.2, ? pre-existing condition)

(5) duration of procedure in minutes (OR 1.03)

Use of prophylactic antibiotic before the procedure reduced risk.

If a urine culture is positive, then it is ideal to treat the infection prior to ureteroscopy. This reduces but does not eliminate the risk of post-procedural infection.
