Description

Lindbohm et al identified risk factors associated with sudden death in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage. The authors are from Helsinki University and the National Institute for Health and Welfare in Finland.


Patient selection: subarachnoid hemorrhage

 

Risk factors for sudden death:

(1) number of cigarettes per day (odds ratio 1.28 for each 5 cigarettes smoked)

(2) hypertension with elevated systolic blood pressure

(3) living alone (without a partner)

(4) increasing age

 

The risk of sudden death was extremely low for anyone with a subarachnoid hemorrhage who shows all of the following:

(1) age < 50 years

(2) never smoker

(3) normotensive

(4) married or cohabiting
