Description

Lin et al identified multiple occurrence of false-positive PCR results while testing for norovirus. Problems can occur when a definitive diagnosis is made based on the results of a single test. The authors are from Chang Gung University, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and Children's Hospital Taoyuan in Taiwan.

PCR target: RdRp (RNA-dependent RNA polymerase) gene

Risk factors for a false-positive PCR result:

(1) positive stool culture for pathogenic bacteria

(2) parenteral antibiotic therapy

The false-positive result was due to amplification of DNA from the patient. This showed the same molecular length as the norovirus target. This was determined by sequencing the material.

A confirmatory test should be performed on a specimen with a positive PCR test for RdRp, especially if the clinical picture suggests another diagnosis. A stool culture should also be performed.
