Description

Liberio et al reported risk factors for acute kidney injury (AKI) in neonates with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). These can help to identify a neonate who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of Colorado, Children's Hospital Denver and Denver Health Medical Center.

Patient selection: neonate with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH)

Risk factors for AKI:

(1) lower antenatal lung volumes

(2) liver herniation

(3) extracorporeal life support

(4) diuretic therapy

(5) abdominal closure surgery

(6) hypotension

(7) elevated plasma free hemoglobin (hemolysis), > 50 mg/dL

The risk of AKI would increase with the number of risk factors present.
