Description

Liao et al identified risk factors for distant metastases in a patient with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity. These can help identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management and closer monitoring. The authors are from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taoyuan, Taiwan.

Risk factors for patients with locoregional control (distant metastasis rate 7%):

(1) metastases in >= 5 lymph nodes

(2) extracapsular spread in lymph nodes

Risk factors for patients with locoregional recurrence (distant metastasis rate 21%):

(1) extracapsular spread in lymph nodes

(2) poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma

(3) pathologic Grade III or IV

(4) recurrence in the neck
