Description

Lee et al identified risk factors for respiratory adverse events in a pediatric patient undergoing surgery. A short delay in surgery can reduce postoperative pulmonary complications. The authors are from University of Seoul, Ewha Womans University, and affiliated hospitals in Seoul, South Korea.

Patient selection: pediatric patient from 0 to 13 years of old

Predictors from multivariate analysis:

(1) abnormalities in the preoperative chest X-ray

(2) surgery during or soon after the upper respiratory infection (less than 1-2 weeks)

Recommendations:

(1) delay surgery until preoperative chest X-ray is normal

(2) wait no less than 1 week after resolution of symptoms

Additional factors from multivariate analysis:

(1) emergency surgery

(2) age under 1 year
