Risk Factors of Lee et al for Catheter-Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI) in a Cancer Patient with a Peripherally Inserted Central Venous Catheter (PICC)
Lee et al reported risk factors for a catheter-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) in cancer patients with PICC lines. The authors are from Seoul National University, the Catholic University of Korea, the National Cancer Center and multiple hospitals in Korea.
Patient selection: cancer patient with PICC line
Criteria for PICC-line related CLABSI:
(1) PICC line present for > 2 days
(2) primary bloodstream infection
(3) presence of a recognized pathogen in >= 1 blood specimens by a microbiology test (culture or nonculture method)
(4) infection not related to an infection at another site
Risk factors for CLABSI:
(1) use of PICC line for chemotherapy (HR 11.4)
(2) use of PICC line for antibiotics (HR 2.9)
(3) use of double lumen PICC line (HR 5.5; catheters had 1 or 2 lumens)
