Description

Lee et al identified risk factors associated with bacteremia in patients with dengue hemorrhagic fever. The authors are from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and Kaohsiung Medical Center, Taiwan.

Major risk factors for bacteremia:

(1) acute renal failure

(2) prolonged fever (> 38°C ) for > 5 days

Other risk factors:

(1) clinical bleeding

(2) altered consciousness

(3) unusual dengue manifestations

(4) dengue shock syndrome (DSS)

Unusual dengue manifestations involved the lack >= 3 of the 5 most frequently seen clinical manifestations other than fever (petechiae, bone pain, abdominal pain, myalgia, headache).

Dengue Shock Syndrome consisted of either WHO Grade III (circulatory failure) or Grade IV (profound shock with undetectable blood pressure or pulse) dengue hemorrhagic fever.

where:

• In the text on page 222 unusual dengue manifestations included the presence of disturbed consciousness. However, in the footnote to Table 2 on page 222 they only mention the common clinical manifestations.
