Description

Lancman et al identified risk factors for a patient having seizures following a stroke. These can help to identify a patient who may require closer monitoring. The authors are from Hospital Italiano in Buenos Aires.

Patient selection: ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke

Exclusions: history of seizures, subdural or subararchnoid or epidural hemorrhage, TIAs

Time of seizure onset:

(1) early: < 1 month after the stroke

(2) late: >= 1 month after the stroke.

Risk factors for seizures:

(1) hemorrhagic stroke

(2) cortical lesions

(3) lesions involving more than 1 lobe

Most patients had a single seizure, with seizure recurrence seen in 27% of patients.
