Description

Kong et al reported factors predictive of mortality following a cerebral gunshot wound. The authors are from University of KwaZulu-Natal, University of Witwatersrand and University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. Several authors are from the Pietermaritzburg Metropolitan Trauma Service.

Patient selection: cerebral gunshot wound

Predictors of death:

(1) visible brain matter (OR 12.4)

(2) Glasgow motor score less than 5 (does not obey commands; does not localize pain; OR 89.6)

The presence of both factors indicates a high mortality rate.
