Ko and Chuang identified risk factors associated with mortality in a patient with cirrhosis who develops bacteremia with an Aeromonas species. These can help identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from National Cheng Kung University Hospital in Taiwan.
Patient selection: Aeromonas bacteremia in a patient with hepatic cirrhosis
Risk factors for mortality:
(1) hypotension on admission
(2) spontaneous bacterial peritonitis as preceding event
(3) presence of diabetes mellitus
(4) high Pugh score (more advanced cirrhosis)
Interpretation:
• minimum number of risk factors: 0
• maximum number of risk factors: 4
• The risk of death increases with the number of risk factors present.
