Description

Park et al identified risk factors for massive transfusion in adolescents undergoing surgical correction of idiopathic scoliosis. The authors are from the University of Ulsan in Seoul.

Patient selection: adolescent with idiopathic scoliosis

Procedure: corrective surgery by the posterior approach

Outcome: massive transfusion (transfusion of > 100% total blood volume within 24 hours)

About 10% of patients received a massive transfusion.

Risk factors associated with massive transfusion in multivariate analysis:

(1) higher number of fused vertebrae

(2) lower body mass index

where:

• The body mass index had a mean of 19.6 kg per sq m +/- 3.0, with minimum 16. A BMI < 18.1 will be used in the implementation to indicate increased risk.

• The number of fused vertebrae had a mean of 11.15 +/- 1.49, with maximum 12.6. A number >= 12 fused vertebrae will be used in the implementation.

Additional factors associated with massive transfusion

(3) Lenke curve type 4

(4) greater Cobb angle when standing

where:

• The Cobb angles had a mean of 56.8 degrees +/- 10.35. maximum 77.2. An angle > 60 will be used in the implementation.
