Description

Karampatsas et al reported risk factors for late onset invasive Group B Streptococcal disease. These can help to identify a patient who should be more closely monitored. The authors are from St. George's University of London, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, UK Health Security Agency MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit and Public Health England.

Patient selection: late-onset invasive group B Streptococcal disease (LOGBS), Streptococcus agalactiae

Time of onset: 1 week to 3 months

Presentations: sepsis, meningitis or other invasive infection

Predictors of LOGBS:

(1) prematurity (OR 5.66), born at < 34 weeks

(2) low birth weight (OR 6.73), with birth weight < 2,500 g

(3) maternal colonization with Group B Streptococcus (OR 2.67)

(4) multiple gestation pregnancy (OR 8.01)

The risk of LOGBS increases with the number of risk factors present.
