Kang et al reported risk factors for acute kidney injury (AKI) in elderly patients following surgery for a hip fracture. These can help to identify a patient with a complicated postoperative course. The authors are from Inha University in South Korea.
Patient selection: hip fracture in an older adult (> 60 years, with mean age 70.1)
Incidence of AKI: 4.4%
Predictors of acute kidney injury:
(1) postoperative serum albumin < 2.8 g/dL (OR 1.8)
(2) estimated blood loss > 766.5 mL (OR 1.6)
