Description

Kaddas et al reported risk factors for soft tissue dehiscence around a dental implant. These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

Patient selection: dental implant

Risk factors for peri-implant soft tissue dehiscence (PSTD):

(1) implant malposition (buccolingual malposition)

(2) thin peri-implant biotype

Other factors:

(1) an inadequate band of keratinized mucosa around the implant

(2) smoking

(3) peri-implant bone crest height and thickness

(4) implant design

(5) immediate implant placement protocol

PSTD affects:

(1) aesthetics

(2) long-term survival of the implant
