Description

Johnson et al evaluated patients with systemic sclerosis for risk factors associated with venous thromboembolism. The authors are from Mount Sinai Hospital (Toronto), University of Toronto, Toronto General Hospital and King Fahad Central Hospital (Jizan, Saudi Arabia).

Patient selection: systemic sclerosis

Outcome: venous thromboembolism

In general, the rate of venous thromboembolism in a patient with systemic sclerosis is similar to that of the general population. It also does not appear to impact survival in most patients.

Risk factors for venous thromboembolism associated with systemic sclerosis:

(1) pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH, odds ratio 3.8)

(2) peripheral arterial disease (odds ratio 5.3)

(3) antibody to Scl-70 (odds ratio 2.5)

(4) anticardiolipin antibodies (odds ratio 5.7)

The presence of these risk factors may increase the risk of thromboembolism, especially if there are general risk factors for thromboembolism.
