Jia et al reported risk factors for cataract in a patient being treated for retinoblastoma. These can help to identify a patient who may require closer monitoring or a change in therapy. The authors are from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Patient selection: patient being treated for retinoblastoma with eye-preserving therapy.
Risk factors for cataract:
(1) higher dose of melphalan per intra-arterial chemotherapy cycle (HR 3.5)
(2) higher number of intra-arterial chemotherapy cycles
(3) higher number of intravitreous chemotherapy cycles
(4) higher intraocular pressure
(5) endophytic growth pattern for the retinoblastoma
In the past radiation therapy was a risk factor for cataracts, but the use of radiotherapy has declined.
