Description

Jain et al identified risk factors predictive of readmission following inpatient plastic surgery. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Northwestern University, University Hospital Case Medical Center and Vanderbilt University.

Patient selection: inpatient plastic surgery with ASA <= 4

Outcome: 30-day hospital readmission

Predictors of readmission from multivariate analysis:

(1) chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

(2) previous percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)

(3) hypertension requiring medication

(4) bleeding disorder

(5) ASA class 3 or 4

(6) body mass index >= 30 kg per square meter

The risk of readmission increases with the number of risk factors present.
