Imai et al identified risk factors associated with gastrointestinal surgery. These can help to identify patients who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Keio University in Tokyo.


 

Surgeries were performed on the stomach and colon.

 

Risk factors for SSI with colon surgery:

(1) body mass index >= 25 kg per square meter

(2) open surgery (vs laparoscopic)

(3) duration >= 2 hours

(4) transverse colectomy

 

Risk factors for SSI with gastric surgery:

(1) age >= 70 years of age

(2) open surgery (vs laparoscopic)

(3) duration >= 6 hours (p value 0.07)

(4) diabetes mellitus (on univariate analysis)
