Description

An airgun pellet can cause serious injury and even death. The risk for a significant airgun pellet injury is affected by a number of factors.

Risk factors for a significant airgun pellet injury:

(1) unsupervised use by a child

(2) firing the airgun in a public place

(3) firing the airgun at someone

(4) lack of training in handling the gun

(5) cleaning a gun that is still loaded

(6) use of an airgun with high muzzle velocity and high velocity pellets

(7) child with a history of previous traumatic injury (in Hutchinson's series over half of the patients had a significant past history of visits to the Emergency Department)

(8) lack of respect or failure to understand the injury potential
