Description

Huang et al identified risk factors for mortality in patients with pyogenic liver abscess. These can help identify patients who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Taichung Veterans General Hospital (Taiwan), Johns Hopkins Hospital and the University of Michigan.


 

Risk factors for mortality by univariate analysis (during period of 1973 to 1993):

(1) multiple abscesses

(2) malignant biliary obstruction

(3) jaundice and hyperbilirubinemia

(4) hypoalbuminemia (cutoff not specified)

(5) leukocytosis (cutoff not specified)

(6) bacteremia

(7) septic shock

(8) fungal infection (pure or mixed with bacterial)

(9) development of a significant complication
