Description

A patient with carbon monoxide poisoning may develop acute kidney injury (AKI). Huang et al identified risk factors for AKI in these patients. The authors are from Tungs' Taichung MetroHarbor Hospital, China Medical University and Jen-Teh Junior College of Medicine in Taiwan.

Patient selection: carbon monoxide poisoning

Risk factors for acute kidney injury (AKI):

(1) severity of CO poisoning (severe aHR 3.8; mild or moderate aHR 2.2; reference without CO poisoning)

(2) older age (>= 50 years aHR 5; 35 to 49 years aHR 1.7)

(3) male sex (aHR 2)

(4) diabetes (aHR 2.2)

(5) hypertension (aHR 2.3)

(6) hyperlipidemia (aHR 1.8)

(7) COPD (aHR 1.7)

(8) CHF (aHR 3)

The risk of acute kidney injuries increases with the number of risk factors, some of which are comoribidities.
