Huang et al reported risk factors for a poor quality of life in a patient with head and neck cancer. These can help to identify a patient who should have a more careful evaluation. The authors are from St John Ascension Hospital and Botsford Hospital in Detroit.

Risk factors with greater impact:
(1) radiation therapy
(2) perioperative feeding tube utilization
Other factors that may contribute to a worse quality of life:
(1) chemotherapy
(2) male gender
(3) perioperative tracheostomy
(4) tobacco use
(5) marital status single or divorced
(6) neck dissection
(7) alcohol use
