Description

Hu et al reported risk factors for urinary tract infections (UTI) in postmenopausal women. These can help to identify a woman who should be more closely monitored for evidence of infection. The authors are from Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System and University of Washington in Seattle.

Patient selection: postmenopausal woman, healthy and community-dwelling

Risk factors for a urinary tract infection:

(1) history of urinary tract infection (odds ratio 4.2)

(3) diabetes mellitus (odds ratio 2.8)

Additional risk factors (odds ratio 1.4):

(1) sexually active

(2) incontinence

These factors are relatively constant so place the woman at risk for recurrent UTIs.
