Description

Hsieh et al evaluated nutritional support of patients with sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Early initiation of enteral feedings has prognostic significance. The authors are from Taipei Medical University, Shenzhen Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and Chang Gung University.

Patient selection: sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease

Enteral nutrition is usually initiated for swallowing failure.

Predictors of early initiation of enteral feedings because of swallowing failure:

(1) myoclonus

(2) elevated 14-3-3 protein in the CSF

Predictors of early deterioration in sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease:

(1) akinetic mutism

(2) early initiation of artificial feeding
