Description

He et al reported risk factors for new-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) after an acute myocardial infarction (AMI). These can help to identify a patient who should be monitored more closely for atrial fibrillation. The authors are from Guangdong Sanjiu Brain Hospital, Guangzhou Medical University and Guangdong Provincial Corps Hospital of Chinese People's Armed Police Force in China.

Patient selection: acute myocardial infarction (AMI)

Risk factors identified on meta-analysis:

(1) older age (difference between means about 10 years, with most groups >= 65 years of age)

(2) higher heart rate on admission (difference between means about 5 bpm, with most > 80 bpm)

where:

• The baseline heart rate prior to the AMI was not analyzed.

The presence of NOAF is associated with a worse outcome, so it is important to detect it when possible
