Description

Han et al reported risk factors for hospital-acquired pneumonia in psychiatric inpatients. These can help to identify a patient who may need to be more closely monitored. The authors are from Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University.


Patient selection: psychiatric inpatient

 

Frequency in general: 1.15%

 

High risk groups:

(1) patients on closed wards

(2) patients with organic mental disorders or schizophrenia

 

Risk factors of hospital-acquired pneumonia:

(1) hypoproteinemia (? hypalbuminemia; ? hypogammaglobulinemia; OR 10.3)

(2) chronic liver disease (OR 4.3)

(3) previous psychiatric hospitalization within the past 6 months (180 days; OR 3.8)

(4) body mass index <= 18.5 kg per square meter (OR 1.9)

(5) therapy with mood stabilizers (OR 1.6)

(6) therapy with clozapine (OR 3.9)

(7) therapy with cholinesterase inhibitors (OR 1.7)
